Job Mokgoro’s resignation as the Premier of North West was a significant event in South African politics. On August 26, 2021, Mokgoro announced his resignation during a virtual media briefing. His decision to step down came after a period of speculation and pressure from the African National Congress (ANC) Interim Provincial Committee (IPC), which had been calling for his removal, accusing him of not taking instructions from the party

Mokgoro met with President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss his resignation prior to making it public. He expressed his intentions to root out corruption that had plagued the province, a goal he had pursued throughout his tenure. Despite his departure from the office of Premier, Mokgoro indicated his willingness to continue serving the province in various capacities. He also took the opportunity to thank the people of North West for their support and the ANC for the opportunity to represent the party as the premier.

Following his resignation as Premier, Mokgoro also resigned as a member of the North West Provincial Legislature the next day, on August 27, 2021. His successor, 67-year-old Bushy Maape, was announced to replace him.
