Ibrahim Lamorde was confirmed as Chairman by the Senate on 15 February 2012. He joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1986 and had a distinguished career, retiring as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021.

Lamorde’s tenure at the EFCC was marked by his efforts to combat financial crimes in Nigeria. He was known for his work in the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police, where he investigated advance-fee fraud until 2002. Sadly, Ibrahim Lamorde passed away on 25 May 2024 in Cairo, Egypt.

Ibrahim Lamorde’s career in law enforcement and anti-corruption is a testament to his dedication and integrity. His journey began in 1986 when he joined the Nigerian Police Force.

In the early stages of his career, Lamorde served in various capacities within the Nigerian Police. From 1987 to 1988, he worked at the Niger State Police Command in Minna, and from 1988 to 1989, he was the Divisional Crime Officer in Rijau, Niger State. He also held the position of Police Public Relations Officer for the Niger State police from 1989 to 1993.

Lamorde’s expertise in financial crimes began to take shape in 1993 when he was appointed an officer of the newly created Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police. Here, he investigated advance-fee fraud, also known as ‘419’ fraud, until 2002. His proficiency in this area was recognized internationally, and from 2000 to 2001, he was seconded to the United Nations Civilian Police in East Timor as a Chief Investigation Officer.

The establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2003 marked a significant turn in Lamorde’s career. He was appointed as the pioneer Director of Operations, a role that positioned him at the forefront of Nigeria’s efforts to curb financial crimes and corruption. His leadership and operational acumen were evident, and he played a crucial role in shaping the early years of the EFCC.

Lamorde’s first stint as Acting Chairman of the EFCC came in January 2008, following the removal of Nuhu Ribadu. Although his tenure was brief, as Farida Waziri was appointed Chairperson in May 2008, Lamorde’s impact was felt. He returned to the EFCC in December 2010 as Director of Operations, replacing Stephen Otitoju, and once again took on the role of Acting Chairman when Farida Waziri was dismissed in November 2011.

His appointment as the substantive Chairman of the EFCC was confirmed by the Senate on February 15, 2012. During his tenure, Lamorde tackled high-profile corruption cases and enhanced the commission’s international collaboration.

Despite facing allegations of misappropriation, which he denied, Lamorde’s commitment to his role remained unwavering until he was replaced by Ibrahim Magu in November 2015. He retired from the police force as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and dedication to justice.
