Nyesom Wike was born on December 13, 1967, in Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor, Rivers State, Nigeria. His early life was rooted in the vibrant culture and traditions of the Ikwerre people, an ethnic group in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
Wike’s educational journey began at the Government Secondary School in Obiakpor, Rivers State, where he pursued his secondary education.
After completing his secondary education, Wike took a significant step towards his professional aspirations by enrolling at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology. It was here that he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Law in 1998.
Upon completing his studies at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Wike proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, where he finalized his legal education in 1997.

Nyesom Wike’s political career began in 1999 when he was elected as the Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, a position he held for two consecutive terms until 2007.
In 2007, Wike took on the role of Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State, serving under Governor Rotimi Amaechi. This position allowed him to gain valuable experience in state governance and administration, further honing his political acumen.
Wike’s political career took a national turn when he was appointed Minister of State for Education in July 2011. In 2014, Wike won the Rivers State People’s Democratic Party primary and selected Ipalibo Banigo as his running mate for the deputy governor. This victory set the stage for his gubernatorial campaign, which was successful when he defeated his opponents from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP) in the 2015 elections.
As the Governor of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023, Wike implemented various reforms and projects aimed at improving the lives of the citizens. His administration focused on areas such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, earning him recognition and support among the populace.
In March 2022, Wike declared his intention to run for the presidency of Nigeria under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party. Although he was a strong contender, he was defeated in the primaries by Atiku Abubakar, who won with 371 votes to Wike’s 237, making him the first runner-up.
Following his gubernatorial tenure, Wike was appointed as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in August 2023 by President Bola Tinubu.
