Philip Shaibu Biography
Philip Shaibu (born December 1, 1969) is a Nigerian accountant and politician. He served as the Deputy Governor of Edo State from 2016 until his impeachment in 2024.
Comrade Shaibu received a Bachelor of Science degree (Honours) in Accounting from the University of Jos in 2000, where he also served as the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) between 2000 and 2001.
Shaibu ventured into politics in 2003, by contesting elections into the Edo State House of Assembly under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) but lost. He has been associated with various political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Philip Shaibu’s Impeachment
In a dramatic turn of events, Philip Shaibu, the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, faced impeachment during his tenure.
In April 2023, rumors of a plot to impeach Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu surfaced. He took preemptive action by approaching the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to halt the alleged plan.
His court application sought to:
- Restrain the governor and his agents from harassing, intimidating, or preventing him from carrying out his duties as Deputy Governor.
- Prevent the initiation of impeachment proceedings against him.
The Edo State House of Assembly responded by setting up a seven-man investigative panel to probe allegations of misconduct against Shaibu. The panel’s mandate was to examine the allegations and determine their validity.
On Monday, April 8, 2024, the Edo State House of Assembly reached a momentous decision. Eighteen members voted in favor of Shaibu’s impeachment, while one member abstained.
The panel’s report revealed that perjury allegations were not proven. However, the disclosure of official secrets was substantiated against the Deputy Governor.
The Speaker officially announced Philip Shaibu’s impeachment, marking the end of his more than seven-year tenure as Deputy Governor.
