The cause of his untimely demise was a stroke, which he suffered after being in the hospital for two and a half days. Prior to his hospitalization, Michael had collapsed at his home in Lavington after experiencing severe headaches. His body was later transferred to the Lee Funeral Home, where it awaited a post-mortem.

Michael Oyier was laid to rest in a solemn ceremony attended by family, friends, and colleagues who gathered to pay their final respects. The requiem mass took place on May 1, 2024 at the All Saints Cathedral, and the burial followed on May 3, 2024, at his ancestral home in Homa Bay County. Prior to the funeral, a fundraiser was organized at the All Saints Auditorium to support the family with the funeral expenses.
